Osteopathy is a form of diagnosis and treatment designed to relieve aches and pains throughout the body. By improving the function of joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons, it helps restore balance and allows the body to work in harmony.
Based on a holistic approach to health, osteopathy emphasizes the vital role of the musculoskeletal system in overall well-being. Treatment focuses on supporting the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Techniques may include soft tissue work, stretching, and gentle manipulation of the bones and muscles.
Low back pain and poor posture are among the most common issues, often linked to busy, modern lifestyles. However, many patients also find osteopathy beneficial for general maintenance and relief from discomfort in areas such as the neck, shoulders, knees, and ankles.
People choose osteopathic treatment for a variety of reasons. Common conditions include:
Back pain
Sciatica
Neck pain
General aches and pains
Whiplash
Minor sports injuries
Arthritic and rheumatic pain
Muscle spasms
Neuralgia
Difficulty relaxing
Fibromyalgia
Circulatory problems
Digestive issues
Joint pain
Cramp

Osteopathy is suitable for people of all ages, from newborns to older adults, and can help relieve a wide range of symptoms. Treatments are gentle, drug-free, and non-invasive, making them a safe and effective option for most individuals.
Whether your discomfort is caused by poor posture, everyday wear and tear, repetitive strain, sports injuries, or pregnancy, an osteopath works to restore balance within the body and support your overall health and wellbeing.
Osteopathy can also enhance physical performance by aiding recovery from injury, improving mobility, and supporting better breathing capacity.
While back pain remains the most common issue treated, osteopathy may also help with:
Arthritic pain
Circulatory problems
Cramp
Digestive issues
Fibromyalgia
Frozen shoulder
Shoulder and elbow pain
Tennis elbow
Cervicogenic headaches

Your first appointment begins with a detailed case history, where you’ll be asked about your health, including any past injuries (such as falls, accidents, or fractures), existing conditions, and any medication you may be taking.
This is followed by a physical examination of the affected area. This may include assessing your movement (such as bending or stretching), checking reflexes, and measuring your blood pressure. For this, you may be asked to remove outer clothing, so it’s helpful to bring shorts and a loose-fitting T-shirt to change into.
After the assessment, your osteopath will explain their findings, provide a diagnosis, and discuss a personalised treatment plan.
Treatment is usually included in the first session and may involve techniques such as soft tissue massage to ease muscle tension, along with gentle joint movements to improve flexibility and mobility.
You’ll also be given tailored advice to support your recovery at home, including specific exercises and guidance on using heat or cold therapy between sessions.

Training consists of a four-year full time degree course, consisting of Anatomy, Physiology, Neural Science, Pathology, Pharmacology and Radiology, with a large part of the osteopath's training mirroring that required as standard by medical students aspiring to become Doctors.
All Osteopaths have to be registered by a Regulatory Governing Body called the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).

Cranial osteopathy is a gentle and subtle form of osteopathic treatment that uses light touch to release tension within the body. It is particularly suitable for babies, children, and during pregnancy, as it works with the body’s natural rhythms and supports its ability to heal.
This approach is often used to help infants and children who may be affected by the stresses of birth. While some babies adapt easily, others—especially after a long, rapid, or assisted delivery (such as forceps, ventouse, or caesarean section)—may experience tension that can lead to symptoms like unsettled behaviour, feeding difficulties, poor sleep, or digestive discomfort such as wind or colic.
Cranial osteopathy can also support mothers during and after pregnancy. As the body adapts to a growing baby, changes in posture and movement can lead to discomfort, including back pain, pelvic imbalance, sciatica, and joint aches. Treatment aims to ease these strains, support pelvic balance, and promote overall comfort throughout pregnancy.
After birth, osteopathy can help relieve common issues such as neck and shoulder pain from feeding and carrying your baby. It can also provide guidance on posture and recovery, helping the body return to balance more comfortably.
